A recent IDC study (sponsored by Microsoft) based on interview with over 4,000 business leaders globally reveals important insights into how companies worldwide are creating value using AI.
🎯 Key findings:
• Organizations are achieving an average 3.7x return on their generative AI investments (ROI)
• “Top performers” are realizing an impressive 10.3x ROI
• The two primary business objectives globally: Employee productivity and top-line growth
• Generative AI shows higher ROI compared to traditional AI across industries
📈 Which types of AI use cases deliver currently the highest ROI?
1. Productivity use cases (43%)
- Focus: Individual employee productivity and efficiency
- Example: Reducing time on analysis and task completion
2. Functional use cases (31%)
- Focus: Line-of-business specific applications
- Examples: Marketing, sales, IT, supply logistics
3. Industry use cases (26%)
- Focus: New business models, products and services
- Examples: Improved retail ordering, streamlined manufacturing
🔍 Trends:
• While productivity use cases currently provide highest ROI on average, increased focus on functional and industry applications in the next 24 months is expected
• The biggest challenge globally: Lack of skills and capabilities in organizations to utilize AI (!!)

Interestingly: Microsoft has recently revealed that approx. 70% of Fortune 500 companies now using Microsoft 365 Copilot.
